Professor Yan-Shen Shan, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist specializing in gastrointestinal malignancies. His work focuses on integrating clinical needs with translational research to advance precision medicine for gastrointestinal cancers. Since 2003, Professor Shan has led multidisciplinary efforts in UGI cancer (gastric, hepatobiliopancreatic cancer) research, establishing evidence-based therapeutic strategies through integrated translational studies and clinical trial design. His work has contributed to substantial improvements in long-term survival outcomes for patients with pancreatic cancer. In 2017, he founded the Taiwan Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Clinical Trial Consortium (TCTC), connecting 10 medical centers nationwide to facilitate multicenter clinical trials, promote domestically developed anticancer drugs, and validate chemotherapy regimens tailored to Asian patient populations.

Professor Shan’s research interests include the tumor microenvironment, mechanisms of therapeutic resistance, cancer cachexia, nanomedicine-based drug delivery systems, and multi-omics data integration. By incorporating big data analytics and artificial intelligence, his team develops predictive models for prognosis and treatment response, enabling clinically applicable personalized precision medicine. His published several manuscripts in leading international journals such as Molecular Cancer, Nature Communications, Advanced Science, and Theranostics, and has been awarded with several outstanding research (Hsu Chien-Tien Clinical Cancer, Tung Ta-Cheng Basic Cancer, Ministry of Science and Technology Outstanding Research, Surgeon Kao Tien-Cheng) and Innovation Awards (New Startup and Future Technology Award).

In terms of education and talent cultivation, Professor Shan emphasizes a clinical problem-oriented approach and an empirical research spirit. He cultivates students and young physicians who possess both clinical sense and research capabilities, promotes the integration of basic research, translational medicine, and clinical trials, and continuously strengthens the institute’s academic depth and international visibility in the field of gastrointestinal cancer research.
